Post-Surgical Rehab in NJ: Timelines for Knee, Shoulder and Hip

July 21, 2026

Surgery repairs the structure. Rehab restores the function. If you are planning post-surgical rehab in NJ, knowing the phases makes the whole process less stressful.

Knee (ACL, meniscus, replacement)

  • Weeks 0–2: swelling control, full extension, quad activation
  • Weeks 2–6: range of motion, gait normalization, early strengthening
  • Weeks 6–12: loading, balance, endurance
  • Month 3+: power, agility and sport testing where relevant

Shoulder (rotator cuff, labrum)

Protected motion first, then active motion, then progressive strengthening. Rushing the first six weeks is the most common cause of setbacks.

Hip (replacement, labral repair)

Walking mechanics and glute strength drive the outcome. Most people underestimate how much strength work the hip needs after the pain resolves.

Two rules that apply to all of them

  1. Follow the surgeon's protocol on restrictions, but let function — not the calendar alone — drive progression.
  2. Do not stop at pain-free. Stop when strength is symmetrical.

We coordinate directly with your surgeon's protocol. Schedule your first post-op visit.
